University of Tokyo Faculty of Arts and Sciences 2nd semester 2018 "Special Friday Course for High School Students" ⑦

2018.12.08

【Date and time】 December 7 (Fri) 17: 30 ~ 19: 00 / 【Venue】 Information Room 1
【Theme】 "A problematic mathematical problem related to infinity and skillfully avoiding the Lebesgue integral"

Lecturer:Professor Tsuyoshi Yoneda…Associate Professor, Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Tokyo

The last "Friday's Special Talk for High School Students" talk for this year was based on the theme of "A problematic mathematical problem related to infinity and skillfully avoiding the Lebesgue integral". 38 Year 1 students and one Year 3 student attended. The Year 3 student commented that he had studied the topic beforehand and thus he could understand the lecture. As the first grader still has not done integration in Mathematics yet, most of them expressed that it was "Totally incomprehensible · · · · ". However, it seems that they comprehended the first "rational number" and "real number", length, the countable and the uncountable. After the lecture, some commented, "I didn't know there is such a thing.." and they interpreted on their own and explained to those around them. Some honestly expressed, they realized there are things they do not understand.
It was a great stimulation for the 30 students to listen to lectures by teachers from the University of Tokyo for 14 times each year. The annual Year 1 student tour of Tokyo University is scheduled to be in March. We are supposed to visit the laboratory of Mr. Michiue in this lecture.
We hope to continue doing such lectures next year.
